Chapter Twelve

“Uh, Book. Is this going to be weird?”

There was the question. Now that she’d had what she wanted, what did she want next? “No, not if we do it often enough.”

Tommy started to laugh, and the vibrations rippled through her breasts, belly, and…umm, pussy. Maybe “often enough” included now.

His lips nibbled her ear. “You’re great. You know that?”

“It means a lot that you think so.”

He raised his head from her shoulder and looked into her face. “You know it too, right?”

Did she? “Yeah, most days.”

“You’re a phenomenon. A force of nature. There’s nobody like you.” He kissed her nose. His weight was comforting.

Maybe they should talk before they fucked again. Sigh. Not her first choice but wise. She kissed his nose in return. “Should we discuss things?”

He grinned. “Ah, the words a man most hates to hear.”

He laughed, and his diaphragm pushed down on her belly. “Isn’t that supposed to be my line?”

He gazed at her steadily, then rolled to the side. She missed him already.

“If we want to do this right, I guess we have to talk about it.” He removed the condom, hopped from the bed, and headed for the bathroom. God, he had the cutest butt. Even better naked than in jeans. Narrow and tight with dips in each cheek.

She heard the water run and the toilet flush. His head appeared around the corner of the bathroom door. “I’ll be right back. Don’t go anywhere.”

Go anywhere? Still, after he left she got up, peed, peered at her face in the mirror—yep, thoroughly debauched—and hurried back to the bed. She sat against the headboard. A couple of pillows propped her up. She arranged her hair over her shoulder and took a deep breath. Book, relax. He said he really likes you. But it was kind of hard to figure out why.

She cared what he thought. A lot. Funny, when he’d told Mama he wasn’t gay, it was like some key fit in a lock and turned. All those things she’d told herself for years. He’s too young. Yeah, he’s gorgeous, but I just like pretty guys. It’s not personal. He’s my pal. All of them vanished in a puff, and he stood there looking eligible and irresistible. But just because the ineligible sign was off him didn’t mean anything had changed. He was still a gentle homebody, and she was a screaming Valkyrie.

She heard soft steps on the stairs. Through the door he came, completely naked, carrying a tray loaded with fruit, cheese, a bottle of champagne, two glasses, and that infamous bowl of whipped cream now overflowing with white clouds and strawberries on the side.

She stared at all the goodies. “You were thinking I didn’t get enough to eat?”

“The way to a woman’s heart and all that.” He set it down on the bed, which put all his assets fully on display as he bent over. And what a show.
